About Me
Sergey Gornushkin was born in Saint Petersburg, a city which is considered to be the culture capital of Russia. There Sergey attended the prestigious St. Petersburg Art Academy where his artistic career got it’s foundation amidst a turbulent time in Russian history with the collapsing Soviet State. In 1995 Sergey moved to the United States where he attended University of Florida, attaining a MFA degree in Graphic Design and Sculpture. Following his education Sergey took an artist residency offer from General Motors to be part of the design and illustration team in Ocala, FL and Detroit, MI. At General Motors Sergey acquired invaluable knowledge and skills in metric conversions, AutoCAD design, large-scale fabrication, and team work. After fulfilling his contract with GM, Sergey relocated to Los Angeles, California where he took a teaching position at the Los Angeles Technical Institute, LAORT. Teaching provided Sergey with experience in short and long term time management, social communication, curriculum supervision and leadership qualities. While holding a teaching position Sergey also participated in solo and group art shows, musical endeavors, as well as in film and entertainment industry, all of which have proven to be too far removed from Sergey’s true passion, Sculpture. Following his move to San Diego in search of an artistic calling, Sergey has joined the San Diego Sculptors Guild, where he now holds the position of President. Having established a solid foundation for a career as a sculptor, Sergey has since been involved in building artwork for the City of San Diego, the Unified Port of San Diego, for the San Diego Unified School District, for Balboa Park and Recreation Department, for the City of Vista as well as for private and corporate clients in the United States and abroad. With the backing of the San Diego Sculptors Guild Sergey is working on creating community outreach programs which are aimed at engaging the public interest in the arts and in sculpture in particular. Sergey’s most outstanding achievement was to create and permanently install large-scale sculptures on San Diego School campuses for children, teachers, parents and community to enjoy for many years into the future. Sergey is currently working on a plan to implement sculptural school campus improvements in a majority of Schools in San Diego and, as much as it is possible, nationwide. Sergey is also currently involved in an international sculpture project in Baja California, Mexico, a number of guest teaching positions and in organizing events and exhibits at the San Diego Sculptors Guild. Following numerous large-scale sculpture installations in Puertecitos, BC, Mexico for the cause of protecting the Sea of Cortez, in 2016 Sergey opened Pez Gallery in Puertecitos to serve as the hub for all cultural activities in the region. In 2018 Pez Gallery has partnered up with UABC University of Ensenada on student exchange programs, exhibits that focus on environmental protection as well as for a large-scale Whale Tail sculpture project for the entrance to the university campus.
